about

Birds… Fly South!, The Duke of Norfolk’s debut full-length album, has been in the pipes since the beginning. Promptly following his first release The Lazy Sunshine EP he began planning how he wanted to deal with the nearly one-hundred songs he had written partially inspired by the migration habits of birds. Originally intended as an immediate follow up to his EP series on the same migration theme, the release has been postponed several times and many original recordings were thrown away. The result is something that reinvents many of the tracks from the EPs and far exceeds the album it almost was.

Track Name: Oh Freedom
Oh Freedom!

Oh Freedom!

Oh Freedome over me.

And before I'll be a slave I'll be buried in my grave and go home to my Lord and be free.
Track Name: The South
60 years is just too bold
a number that might steal your soul
and it just takes time…

you've been down this road before
for 30 years and 30 more
well you've never left

you grew up in the south
fighting life with your broken mouth
and your trusted gun

it's a simple life
for a simple man
and the city folk
won't understand….
but it is yours.

your children are all grown and gone
and your wife, she faded with the dawn
and your left alone

but what the hell do these people think
and what the hell do these people mean
when they say you're done?

you grew up in the south
fighting life with your broken mouth
and your trusted gun

it's a simple life
for a simple man
and the city folk
won't understand….
but it is yours.
Track Name: Open Sea
Running towards the open sea,
running with my hands held to the sky.
With all my amenities,
all these things that help to get me by.

And we'll dance and we'll sing all... all of our lives

Help me with my memory
it seems that i've forgotten how to smile.
Oh i've been so crotchety,
but you've been here, you held me for a while.

So we'll join hands together and sing… of our life

Have I drifted far from home?
This ungrateful heart now to expire?
Like a thief caught on the run,
whose gift of death is soon to be required.

And I never did thank you... for my life
Oh mum won't you let me thank you… for my life
Track Name: Ode to Winter
Well the snow burned,
the snow burned,
through our eyes.

And we hid our
and we hid our
thoughts behind lies...

So the world won't know who we are

And we kept our
and we kept our selves
to ourselves

We never let the
never let the
cold overwhelm...

For cold's just a state of the mind

Cold's just a state of the mind.
Track Name: Desert Isle
Down by the beach I was strolling up and down the weathered path holding bottles full of wishes that might drown, when the water made it's rise and I tossed the bottles in and pray to God that someone hear me and comfort me again.

Well the trees ain't much for friendship and the water only talks with grunts and sort of almost whimpers, to be likened to a gawk, I tire and sit atop the cliff face and watch the ocean's spray. It's hard when all they do is listen, but I don't have much to say

Oh i've been stranded on this desert isle.
I've been here several years and I'm wondering if this was worthwhile

These words might flow like springs with taps you turn the water on but sometimes plumbing doesn't work and your sucked into a storm of currents ever always flowing, the kind you cannot ford, you have to discard all belongs and jump across the fjord

Oh i've been stranded on this desert isle.
I've been here several years and I'm wondering if this was worthwhile

Oh please get me off this desert isle
because man is not rock and I am not so full of guile
Track Name: The First Day of Spring
We speak in verse to hide our words.
We are afraid to meet our days.

The future's here
but still unclear.
I bit my tongue,
I didn't run.

Don't look ahead just to find your death.
Don't count your days just to see them fade.
Don't miss the kiss which now parts your lips.
Don't ask to fly if the ground is your sky.

For the wind and the trees,
for the flowers and the breeze,
for the song we shall sing
it is spring, it is spring.
Track Name: Nightingale Movement II
To say of one's self with beauty and doubt
that there are no words so fluidly spout
is to erase the message within
that we are still lovers though spotted with sin.

I know I'm not old but still I'm not free
for courage is lost in vain bravery
and if there's an out it's that I can't see
well be this your lock then hand me the key.

We're not alone, so take me by the hand
and we'll compose a poem and some sort of plan.
These veins still flow with warm precious life
as long as we stand, we'll stand and we'll fight.
Track Name: The Storm & the Sea
here a voice was raised
here a song was sang in the middle of the night

you didn't shoot me down
though i'm on the ground
there is choice in this life though sometimes that's forgotten

and in school we are taught
to obey our desires but they lead us astray

can we chase our own dreams
can we break from the liar
there are clouds in the sky but the rain isn't coming.

but the children are not listening to the words sung my the churchyard chorus

and it's true we've neglected to learn from the faults of the ones who came before us

I have laughed with you,
we have smiled and sang. does that make this alright?

my emotions roar
they're beyond my control
is there choice in this life? oh it seems i've forgotten

take the sextant of hope
we must measure our bearings for we mustn't get lost

now the sunset is red
let the sailor rejoice
there are clouds in the sky but the storm isn't coming

but the children are not listening to the words sung my the churchyard chorus

and it's true we've neglected to learn from the faults of the ones who came before us

Let us raise our voice
let us sing our song
there is light that breaks the night

we can chase our own dreams
we can break from the liar
there are clouds in the sky but the storm isn't coming.
Track Name: Goodbye
Ever since the start there was inevitable end,
resolution follows climax and that's how a story spins
Since our first hello we've been waiting for goodbye
but it never felt so real until this time pasted us by.

well i'm ready for goodbye, but not quite yet
well I'm ready for goodbye, but not quite yet

A story's worth is set by the word that ends the page,
so now I see this narrative is hanging on today.
Don't let us disintegrate without that final word.
And don't anticipating an easy end, every parting brings us hurt

well I'm ready for goodbye, but not quite yet
well I'm ready for goodbye, but not quite yet

well I'm ready for goodbye, but not quite yet
well I'm ready for goodbye, but not quite yet
